Be Bright Be Seen

Children wore their brightest, most colourful socks to school today to raise awareness of road safety, particularly during the darker months of the year.

As you know, during the Autumn and Winter months, the school run can often take place in low light or even darkness, making it harder for drivers and cyclists to see pedestrians. The visibility on dull days can be especially poor, which is why it’s crucial that we teach our children the importance of being seen when they’re near traffic.

This initiative is part of our broader effort to spread awareness about road safety and highlight simple steps we can all take to improve visibility and safety. For example, wearing a high-visibility coat instead of a dark one can significantly increase a child’s visibility in low light, especially when walking to and from school.

Here are some additional tips to help your child be seen more easily during these darker months:

  • Wear bright and high-visibility colours – A brightly coloured coat or jacket can make a big difference.
  • High-visibility strips – These can be added to your child’s coat, bag, or even shoes.
  • Fluorescent armbands – If your child has a dark coat, these are an easy and effective way to add extra visibility.
  • Reflective accessories – Reflective clothing or stickers on bags are particularly important at night, as they can be seen from car and bike headlights.
