Year 4 Anglo-Saxon Day

Year Four had an exciting and immersive History Day all about the Anglo-Saxons. The children were given the opportunity to step back in time and experience life as it might have been over a thousand years ago, taking part in a range of hands-on activities.

They explored Anglo-Saxon writing by using feathers as quills and practising the Anglo-Saxon alphabet, gaining an appreciation for how people communicated in the past. The children also became craftsmen for the day, creating their own coins from foil and using pointed wooden sticks to carefully engrave detailed patterns.

In addition, they worked creatively with clay and cotton to make their own draughts game, before learning the rules and enjoying friendly matches with their peers. They also designed and made twisted braid jewellery using coloured cotton thread, similar to pieces worn by Anglo-Saxons. To finish the day, the children tried their hand at fletching, using thread, feathers and wooden sticks to create their own arrows.

It was a fantastic day of learning, creativity and fun, bringing history to life in a memorable way for everyone involved!
