Great Science Share at St Mary's University

On 18th May, a group of our Year 5 pupils attended the Great Science Share at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. The day began with an engaging icebreaker, followed by hands-on experiments led by university students, exploring the strength of adhesive tapes, how sound travels through different materials, and air pressure.

Pupils then presented their own sustainability-focused projects to other schools. One group showcased a water filtration system, while the other demonstrated how a wind turbine can be used to lift weights as a sustainable alternative to polluting machinery. They also explored projects from other schools, asking thoughtful questions and showing great curiosity. During these activities, pupils practised key working scientifically skills such as measuring accurately, taking careful recordings, and making detailed observations.

The children enjoyed a tour of the university campus and the day ended with a certificate and goody bag presentation. It was a fantastic experience that inspired their interest in science and raised awareness of future careers in STEM.
