Our Eco Journey

Our Eco Journey showcases the steps we have taken as a school to become more environmentally responsible and sustainable. Led by our Eco-Committee, we have worked together to identify areas for improvement, take meaningful action, and make a positive impact within our school and wider community.

Through initiatives such as reducing waste, saving energy, conserving water and raising awareness, our pupils have played an active role in creating change. This page highlights the progress we have made, the actions we have carried out, and the difference we continue to make as we work towards a greener future.

03.12.25

Eco-Committee members introduced and presented the Count Your Carbon Challenge to their classes during November. 150 pupils took part in the challenge and, as a school, we saved an estimated 693.82 kgCO2e of carbon emissions. Well done to everyone who took part. We hope that the challenge has encouraged pupils and their families to continue making small changes at home that reduce energy use and help protect the environment.

27.02.26

As Eco-Committee members, we have been carrying out daily litter picks during lunchtime to help keep our school grounds clean and tidy. We hope that by leading by example, we can encourage others to take pride in our environment and help make our school a cleaner, safer and more enjoyable place for everyone.

10.03.26

We delivered water awareness assemblies to our classes and introduced the upcoming Water Aid sponsored run planned for 20.03.26. We hope that by sharing what we have learnt, we can help others understand the importance of clean water and encourage everyone to think carefully about how they use water at school and at home.

13.03.26

We designed and displayed posters around the school to remind pupils to save water and reduce unnecessary energy waste. We hope our posters encourage everyone to make small changes that help protect the environment and make our school more sustainable.

16.03.26

To help reduce food waste across the school, Eco-Committee members introduced a system where any uneaten fruit is sent home with pupils on Friday afternoons rather than being thrown away. We hope this encourages everyone to think more carefully about waste and make better use of food that would otherwise be discarded.

20.03.26

We organised and took part in our WaterAid sponsored run to raise money and awareness for communities around the world who do not have easy access to clean water. Together, we raised over £160.00 for WaterAid and were proud to see so many pupils taking part to support this important cause.

18.5.26

WaterAid expressed gratitude for the £163.00 raised by Minet Junior School through our sponsored run in March. The donations helped support communities in Southern Africa affected by flooding.

20.05.26

We carried out litter picking within the roads surrounding the school to help improve the local environment. Unfortunately, we found large amounts of litter, dog fouling (poo) and other unsafe waste items. As a result, we decided that raising awareness by writing to our local MP would be a safer way to help tackle these issues and encourage positive change.

20.05.26

We designed and distributed environmental awareness flyers to local households, introducing ourselves as the Minet Junior School Eco-Committee and sharing information about the work we have been carrying out throughout the year. We also provided practical tips on reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling correctly to help encourage more environmentally friendly habits within our local community.

03.6.26

Thanks to the efforts of pupils across the school, playground litter was reduced from 37 items during our February audit to just 7 items by June.

03.6.26

When we first checked classroom bins, only 4 out of 14 classrooms were sorting waste correctly. By June, every classroom was correctly separating food waste, recycling and general waste. Well done everyone!

03.6.26

Through assemblies, presentations and our WaterAid campaign, awareness of responsible water use increased significantly. The number of pupils demonstrating a secure understanding of water conservation rose from 10 out of 20 pupils in March to 19 out of 20 pupils in June.

04.6.26

We contacted local garages and successfully rescued 80 tyres from landfill to be reused within our upcoming outdoor play area.

11.06.26

We delivered our letter to our local MP to raise awareness of environmental concerns affecting the area around our school, including littering, dog fouling and unsafe waste.

We hope our actions will help bring about positive changes that make our local community cleaner, safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
