Roman Day and Ufton Court Trip
Year 4’s exploration of the ancient world began in the classroom, where students enjoyed an immersive Roman Day that transformed their learning environment into a bustling corner of the Empire. Arriving in impressive costumes, the children brought history to life through character dress-up and a series of hands-on activities. They meticulously crafted intricate mosaics, decorated sturdy shields, and put their problem-solving skills to the test by cracking codes and solving riddles using Roman numerals. To further engage their senses, the children sampled authentic Roman delicacies and delved into the fascinating-and occasionally grim-realities of crime and punishment during the period.
Building on this foundational knowledge, the children then took their learning on the road for an unforgettable trip to Ufton Court. This visit allowed them to step directly into the shoes of a Roman legionary, where they practiced high-energy military manoeuvres and mastered the famous "testudo" shield formation. From handling authentic artefacts to exploring the skills of Roman craftsmanship in a historical setting, the trip perfectly complemented their in-school experience, bridging the gap between classroom theory and the lived reality of Roman Britain.
