Year 6

  • This page showcases how Year 6 contributes to our Eco-Schools journey through curriculum-based learning linked to key environmental topics.

PSHE – Responsible Consumption and Sustainability

In this lesson, pupils explored their role as consumers and how their choices can impact the environment. They investigated issues such as deforestation, fast fashion, overfishing and plastic pollution, and considered how everyday actions contribute to environmental damage. Pupils demonstrated their understanding by explaining the impact of different products and identifying more sustainable choices, developing awareness of how they can help protect the environment through responsible decision-making.

Eco-Schools Topics:

  • Global Citizenship
  • Waste

Science – Non-Renewable Energy

In this lesson, pupils explored non-renewable energy sources and developed their understanding of how these resources are formed and used. They identified key features and disadvantages, including their limited availability and impact on the environment. This learning supported pupils in recognising the need for more sustainable energy solutions and prepared them for further study of renewable energy sources.

Eco-Schools Topics:

  • Energy
  • Global Citizenship

Science – Plant Adaptations

In this lesson, pupils explored how plants are adapted to survive in their environment. They identified key features such as large leaves to capture sunlight, vines for support, and strong-smelling flowers to attract pollinators. Pupils demonstrated their understanding through labelled diagrams, developing awareness of how living things adapt to their habitats.

Eco-Schools Topics:

  • Biodiversity

Geography – Transport and Sustainable Travel

In this lesson, pupils collected and presented data from a local transport survey, exploring different modes of transport used in their area. They created bar graphs to represent their findings and analysed which forms of transport were most and least commonly used.

Pupils reflected on how transport choices impact the environment and considered more sustainable alternatives, such as cycling. They also discussed how to stay safe when travelling, demonstrating an understanding of both environmental responsibility and personal safety in their local community.
